EnRICH:
Program Overview
EnRICH (Engaging Residents Involved in Community
Helping) is the Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, Housing and Residential Life
community service program. Residents participate in service opportunities in
the San Luis Obispo
community. EnRICH helps students:
- develop
community relationships.
- improve
quality of life.
- increase
multicultural awareness.
- develop
a lifelong commitment to service.
In each residence hall/academic community, an EnRICH
Coordinator is elected to promote community service efforts. EnRICH volunteers work cooperatively with Hall/Community
Councils and local nonprofit agencies to coordinate specific hallwide and campuswide
activities.
Blood Drive
Working cooperatively with Tri-Counties Blood Bank, each hall
representative coordinates Blood Drives during the Winter and Spring
Quarters. Awards are given to halls with the highest percentage of donors.
Food and Clothing Drive
At the end of the Fall and Spring academic quarters, EnRICH
sponsors food and clothing drives. Items donated by students are given to
community agencies.
Holiday Gift Drive
Hall residents participate in a campuswide
Student Community Services Holiday Gift Drive benefiting low-income families.
Students work together to purchase items indicated on the “wish lists” of
local children.
Skip-A-Meal
EnRICH cosponsors a quarterly Skip-A-Meal
Program with Campus Dining. Residents choose not to eat a meal on campus and
donate the cost of their meal to a local nonprofit agency. Skip-A-Meal not
only raises money for local food banks, it raises students' awareness of
hunger issues.
Community Center
EnRICH is associated with the Community Center
(CC). CC is the Cal Poly campuswide service program
committed to education for civic responsibility and social change. The Center
works with the community in the following areas:
- Child Mentoring
Program (Best Buddies, Poly Pals, Youth Challenge, and Youth Education
Project)
- Beyond Shelter
(homelessness)
- Students for Social
Change
- Senior Services
- Environmental Council
- Computer Partners
- Raise the Respect
(diversity education)
- Poly Paws
In addition to specific service programs, the Center offers transcript
notation for service hours, service learning opportunities associated with
academic courses and Senior Project opportunities.
The Community Partner Program links residence halls with local nonprofit
organizations. Students develop an understanding of the needs of a specific
population by participating in hands-on volunteer activities with the hall
Community Partner Agency.
