First Year Connection (FYC) Program

Program Overview

New to Cal Poly? The "First Year Connection" offers programs that support your transition to Cal Poly. Located in Sierra Madre, Yosemite and North Mountain, the First Year Connection halls are designed to provide incoming students with the information, resources and support needed to be academically and personally successful at Cal Poly.

Residents will participate in an extended campus orientation program which will offer opportunities for shared experiences. There are also increased opportunities to get involved with leadership, community service and social activities in the halls. Make lasting friendships and make the "connections" that will ensure your success at Cal Poly!

FYC Program Structure

Working together with students in the desire to attain the outcomes of FYC are:

  • Coordinators of Student Development (CSDs).
  • Resident Advisors from Yosemite, Sierra Madre and North Mountain Halls.
  • WOW-FYC orientation leaders.
  • Faculty Associate4/29/08"regular">Housing and Residential Life staff.
  • Campus Departments and services.

All will work toget4/29/08ons made during WOW by implementing exciting and creative academic, social, and personal development programming throughout the year.

FYC Connection Goals

Social

FYC provides students with social support. Students will be connected with:

  • Smaller tower communities allow students to get to know each other.
  • WOW groups assigned by tower in FYC halls.
  • Increased opportunity to get involved in leadership positions.
  • Resident Advisors in each building or tower.
  • Regular social activities planned in towers and halls.

Resource

FYC provides students with the skills and knowlege necessary for first year success. Students will be connected with resources from:

  • Club Fairs and campus involvement resources.
  • Academic support staff participation.
  • Newsletters and monthly bulletin boards introduce important campus resources.

Academic

FYC provides students with academic success strategies. Students will have the opportunity to participate in:

  • Academic support programs.
  • Faculty Associates Program.
  • Study groups.

Involvement

FYC encourages students to become self advocates and active community members. Students have the opportunity for involvement in:

  • Residence Hall Councils.
  • Community service activities.
  • On-campus clubs.
  • Social and educational programs.

FYC Honors Society

Each FYC hall has an Honors Society to recognize students who have outstanding academic achievement. All residents who receive a quarterly grade point average of 3.2 or higher and who are positive community members are eligible to be a part of the FYC Honors Society. Honors banquets are held quarterly to recognize these residents for their accomplishments.
